Your Duvet Cover Fabric Matters More Than the Thread Count
Thread count is a marketing number. What actually determines how your bed feels — cool or clammy, crisp or silky, lasting or disposable — is the fibre itself.
Five fabrics, five different beds
Most bedding sites show you photos that all look the same. The difference is in the fibre — what it's made of, how it's woven, and how it behaves after months of sleeping in it. Here's an honest look at each.
Polyester-Cotton Blend
What most people have- What it is
- Synthetic and cotton mixed together — the default for anything under $50. Brands rarely put "polyester" on the front of the packaging.
- How it feels
- Smooth enough at first. Within a few months it pills, goes slightly rough, and traps heat. You've probably stopped noticing.
- Lifespan
- 1–2 years before it feels worn. The fabric degrades with every wash, not the other way around.
- Best for
- Temporary situations, guest rooms, very tight budgets.
- The catch
- Petroleum-based fibre sitting against your skin, eight hours a night. Doesn't breathe. Doesn't improve. The low price is the only thing it has going for it.
Jersey
T-shirt fabric- What it is
- Knitted cotton — the same construction as a soft t-shirt. Stretchy, casual, familiar.
- How it feels
- Cozy and relaxed. Like pulling on your favourite worn-in tee. Comfortable immediately, no break-in needed.
- Lifespan
- 2–3 years. Stretches out over time and the knit loosens, especially around corners and edges.
- Best for
- Cold sleepers who want warmth over crispness. People who like a casual, lived-in bed.
- The catch
- Wrinkles constantly. Can feel too warm in summer because the knit structure traps body heat. Never looks "made" — always looks slept-in.
Percale
Crisp cotton weave- What it is
- Plain weave — one thread over, one thread under. Tight, matte, breathable. What you feel in a well-made hotel bed.
- How it feels
- Cool and crisp, with a clean hand-feel that gets better with every wash. The kind of bedding that makes you want to straighten the sheets.
- Lifespan
- 3–5 years. Quality percale only improves over time as the fibres soften without losing structure.
- Best for
- Hot sleepers. Anyone who prefers the crisp, clean feeling of a well-made bed over a soft, drapey one.
- The catch
- Wrinkles. That's genuinely part of the charm — a perfectly smooth percale bed doesn't exist, and that's fine. If you need smooth, look at sateen.
Sateen
Smooth cotton weave- What it is
- A satin weave using cotton yarns — four threads over, one under. This exposes more surface area, creating a subtle sheen and a smooth drape.
- How it feels
- Silky and smooth, with a gentle weight. Slightly warmer than percale because the weave is denser. It looks polished without trying.
- Lifespan
- 3–5 years. The lustre fades gradually, and the exposed float threads are more susceptible to snagging than a plain weave.
- Best for
- People who want a luxe feel and a bed that photographs well. Cooler months, or sleepers who don't overheat.
- The catch
- More delicate than percale — prone to pulls and snags. Runs slightly warmer. The sheen can look too glossy in cheaper versions.
Lyocell (Tencel)
Wood-pulp fibre, closed-loop production- What it is
- A fibre made from sustainably harvested wood pulp (usually eucalyptus), dissolved and spun in a closed-loop process that recovers 99% of the solvent. Natural origin, engineered performance.
- How it feels
- Naturally cool to the touch. Impossibly smooth — cooler than cotton, softer than silk. Wicks moisture away from your body instead of trapping it. The temperature regulation isn't a marketing claim; it's the physics of the fibre.
- Lifespan
- 5+ years with proper care. Unlike cotton, lyocell resists pilling and maintains its smoothness wash after wash.
- Best for
- Hot sleepers. Sensitive skin. Year-round comfort. People who want one set of bedding that works in every season.
- The catch
- Higher upfront cost. But keep reading — the cost-per-year math tells a different story.

Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle and skip the softener — lyocell softens on its own, wash after wash. Line dry or tumble low. No ironing needed.
